DESCRIPTION
Mullein is traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as an expectorant and demulcent to help relieve cough and excess mucous, and to soothe the respiratory tract (due to colds, flus or bronchitis). Now Available in Powder and Capsules.
KEY BENEFITS
- Helps relieve cough and excess mucous [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
- Soothes the respiratory tract [1, 2]
- Expectorant and demulcent properties for respiratory comfort [1, 2, 3]
- Traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as an expectorant and demulcent [1]
- Respiratory health support, particularly for cough relief and mucus management [1, 2, 3]
HOW IT WORKS
Holistic Lungs - Mullein provides concentrated respiratory support through a 20:1 organic mullein leaf extract standardized to deliver the equivalent of 3000 mg of raw mullein per serving. Mullein works through several complementary mechanisms:
- Demulcent Action: Mucilage polysaccharides form a soothing, protective film over irritated mucous membranes of the throat and upper respiratory tract, reducing irritation and suppressing the cough reflex [1, 2].
- Expectorant Action: Saponins stimulate the bronchial mucosa to increase mucus secretion, thinning viscous mucus and facilitating its clearance; iridoid glycosides help break down existing mucus, reducing its adhesiveness so it is easier to clear [1, 2, 4].
- Anti-Inflammatory Action: Flavonoids (quercetin, hesperidin) inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators (COX-2, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, histamine) and reduce cytokine production, decreasing airway inflammation [1, 2, 3].
- Antioxidant & Antimicrobial: Phenylethanoid glycosides and vitamin C scavenge free radicals, protecting the respiratory epithelium [1, 2]. In vitro studies demonstrate antibacterial activity against respiratory pathogens including Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus [4].
